TEENAGE WEIGHT LOSS Q & A

by Shefali Chheda, MD

Should Teenage Weight Loss be Supervised?

Teenagers who are overweight should not try to lose weight on their own. During adolescence, a child needs additional nutrients to support the changes that are taking place within the body. A medically supervised weight loss plan will help the child control their diet, maintain the level of nutrition they need, and provide them with the best list of possible activities that can get them started down the road to a healthier, more active lifestyle. It is important for a child to find out why they have gained (or lost) the additional weight and what can be done to correct the situation without causing any further health issues.

Should Teenagers Diet?

Teenagers should not diet. The latest fad diets that appear on the television or in magazines have not been proven effective for anyone.  Diets limit the number of calories the body has access to, which means it can start to burn muscle if fat is no longer available. If a child wants to lose a few pounds, they should thoroughly discuss all of their options with Dr. Chheda.
